Average Audience Member

Through this Slide Share presentation, I showed what a typical member of my targeted audience would be like and why they would be interested in watching a trailer like mine. Throughout this Slideshare, I have  included their interests, personality and general information about them.

I think that a person like Maria is an accurate representation of what my target audience would look or be like. As a result of my previous research, I figured out that my target audience are females of 15-24 years old. This sort of age group has a relatively high amount of disposable income and will therefore be able to go to the cinema and participate in other activities with their family or friends in their free time. Furthermore, I feel like she will like to watch my film because she likes watching shows or films that can be applied to in real life or that she may be able to identify with at any time throughout.

After continuing my research as well as planning, I think that a much more realistically presented target audience member would be again females, however, aged 30-45 as I think the themes covered throughout my films may be a bit more heavy/mature than what I initially thought, particularly because only women at 28+ stereotypically plan to have children or may have difficulty conceiving any. Although, I still think that the information I presented in the slide share presentation still applies to my target audience member as I think they will probably have very similar personalities due to the fact that as I mentioned before Maria is more mature than her age.  I think my film could appeal to both age groups as there are numerous themes covered throughout the whole of my film, such as family relationships, money etc. Here is a picture of what I think my audience member would look like. Inter-titles Analysis

By researching the Inter-title sequence in my focus social realism films that I am using to get inspiration from, I have figured out what intertitles I need to include in my final trailer in order for it to be effective and professional looking. All the elements I analysed throughout this Emaze presentation are elements that help bring a trailer together effectively.

Sight & Sound: front cover analysis

  • Through the use of bright colours and text that takes a handwritten (adds a teenage or childlike feel to it) form, this tells us along with the main photograph that the film is about the character's story. The bright colours are eye catching, drawing the reader in. "21st Century Girl" could be the nick name Sight & Sound's editors/ writers have given to this character, "Modern Britain on Film" and "Andrea Arnold's Fish Tank" suggests to us as an audience that similarly to the magazine, this film is a British Independent one. Furthermore, to attract the already established audience, this is effective as independent film fans are most likely to appreciate and want to watch this film as they will have pre-existing knowledge of the work she has already directed.
  •  The main image has been shown using the rule of thirds. The girl, being the only one in the shot suggests to the audience that she is the protagonist of Fish Tank (we know it's from Fish Tank because as the the main set of text is regarding this film and its size is bigger in comparison to the rest of the text). However, she is positioned off centre, to the bottom right side of the page, suggesting that as a character she may not be very powerful or important. The lighting and the angle of this shot further support this because, she appears smaller in comparison to her surroundings and the text featured about Fish Tank, The mode of address isn't direct or straight forward as the girl on the front cover is gazing to her right, looking away from the audience. This could further suggest that the girl isn't very confident. However, it could be argued that the lighting and angle contradict this because the low angle of the shot forces the audience to slightly look up at her in a way as the this is not an eye level shot of the character, putting her at a different level than the readers. The lighting which is highly contrasted on her face in comparison to the sky and the rest of her body could foreshadow what she is going through. It is put in place to possibly make it look like she has more power than in reality. In addition to this, the location presented in the image is used to set the scene and give the audience an opportunity to get a feel of the type of person the protagonist is. The location and her clothing (wearing a hoodie, t-shirt and what we can guess leggings/ tracksuit bottoms which are typical clothing items for teenagers)  also help do this effectively . This is because the photograph is set in a city/urban area such as Essex, which is in fact where Fish Tank is set in.
  • The usual convention for Sight & Sound magazine is to place their title/logo neatly in the top left hand corner. In comparison to other magazines, it is relatively small, however, as a whole (with the main image, text etc) it seems to work very well. It usually overlaps with the photograph chosen for the front cover. This has lent it self as a form of brand identity and can be recognised internationally for its bold colours. Furthermore, the tagline "The international film magazine" suggests that Sight & Sound can be bought internationally, which gives it a broader audience. The yellow box with the name of the magazine written in black and red font, makes it stand out as it is a contrasting colour. All of he colours chosen for this front cover, link nicely as they complement each other, being opposite on the colour palette.
  • The puff on the magazine just below the pugs, suggests that the main focus of the magazine is to give film reviews, this and the fact that readers can have an annual subscription gives them a more niche audience. The barcode is located at the top right hand corner of the magazines front cover and the month of the release of this magazine is directly beneath, letting readers know that Sight & Sound gets published monthly. Additionally, the pugs include other film reviews and interviews that are included in this particular months issue. This allows the reader to be able to scan the magazine to see what they may or may not be interested to read.
  • As a whole, I think this magazine front cover is very effective and interesting. This is because the central image draws people in, for its clever composition along with the way the text is displayed differently in order to redirect the viewers focus to different issues that are further included within the magazine.

Music Research

  • Because Shank is a British social realism film focusing on sex, teenagers and hip hop music, the films soundtrack included some of the biggest British rap, grime and hip hop artists such as Tinie Tempah, Skepta, Tempa T and Tinchy Stryder. The music chosen, helps further establish the features they are trying to portray realistically (especially since Tempa T appeared in the film for a scene based in a club) as these artists are immediately linked to this type of music.
  • Furthermore, the music in Kidulthood, similarly to that included in Shank is also used to link and effectively portray the settings of the life of the young characters involved with drugs, alcohol, sex and violence. To therefore, effectively show this the artists included on the soundtrack of Kidulthood are the hip-hop and grime "heroes" the troubled teens in the film adore. Such artists include Dizzee Rascal and Lethal Bizzle.
  • In This is England the soundtrack ranges from reggae classics and this is because Shane Meadows (the director) expressed how important he thought it was for people to realise that 'the original skinheads were not right wind thugs' and that 'the 80s were also a time when different tribes and their music collided'. This range of music therefore, had to be included in order for the viewers (mainly the older ones) to be able to realistically relate to the scenario as they will remember what it was actually like. Some of these tracks include 'Pressure Drop' by Toots and the Maytals and 'Ritornare' by Ludvocio.
  • In Fish Tank the music changes depending on the scenario, at times it is also used to further portray Mia's feelings. Mia is a fourteen year old aspiring, though not majorly gifted dance, she favours American R&B and hip-hop. The first song we hear is Me and U by Cassie and it is playing through a inexpensive set of portable speakers as around six teenage girls try to imitate Cassie's dance moves. The director always keeps it realistic and tries to emphasise on the situations and setting the characters are found in. This is shown through having the girls trying to imitate her, setting of Cassie's video is completely different to that on the basketball court the girls are dancing on. Nevertheless, a variety of music by Black-American artists soundtracks the everyday lives of these caucasian characters. Mia's mother is a reggae fan, we see this when she is shown dancing to Gregory Isaacs and Connor (her mum's boyfriend) is a soul and funk fan who he lends Mia CDs and introduces her to artists such as James Brown.

Through further researching the soundtracks and the type of music used in these films, I have realised that music plays an important role in further accomplishing the nature of the film and helps portray what the characters are going through in a different way.
The tracks above show the type of music I would like to include in my trailer as I think these will help further establish the nature of the film and will draw people in to want to watch the rest of the film. There are some parts that will suit music which can help build tension and others where it could show contrast of the two types of couples. For example the first one could be used when the Athena receives the news she is pregnant and then it could transition to the second one to show of she is also upset because she doesn't know if she will be able to keep the child.

Target Audience Research

As I am making a film within the social realism genre, I wanted to research some already well established British films within the same genre. I have already studied their posters, trailers and have additionally watched the films to get a grasp of what exactly the aim of this type of film is and how I can create my own trailer within this genre effectively.  Fish Tank, Shank, This is England and Kidulthood are the main four British social realism films I have been researching and this is because although they may differ in the nature that they cover within the social realism sector, they do however, make them very realistic to the point where most of or almost all of the targeted audience can identify with most of or even every single part of the film.
By further researching these films, I tried to figure out which the targeted audience for each one was. Although some of them may differ for the age of their targeted audience and this is because of the age certificate given to the films, as some of them have different amount of nudity, harsh language etc included throughout the film. They all however have one thing in common, all of the targeted audience are British, as these scenarios included in the films can be applied to numerous parts of the UK.
Kidulthood, Shank and Fish Tank have certificates confirmed by the BBFC of the age 15, however Kidulthood and Shank do have a lot more violence and sex/nudity scenes included throughout in comparison to Fish Tank. The main target audience of Fish Tank are therefore, mainly teenagers between the ages of 15-19 both female and male. Kidulthood and Shank, however, are both targeted for males aged 16-19, although this doesn't mean that the film hasn't attracted British female viewers. This is England is the only film out of the four which has a certificate rating of the age 18 and this is because although the director intended the targeted audience to be the same as the other three films, once it was released the certificate was moved to 18 due to the language, nudity and other adult features included. This meant that the targeted audience couldn't watch it at the cinema, however, it just meant that it the targeted a broader audience and did equally as well. The targeted audience for This is England is males and females aged 16-24. However, older males of that generation or the previous one may like to watch it because they can relate and remember what it was actually like in the time where the film was set.
Through this research, I have realised that I want my targeted audience to be mainly females aged 15-24, although the narrative of my film will also attract and allow male viewers to identify with the scenario. My film will include very few scenes of nudity (such as Athena giving birth etc), however this won't be included in my trailer because I won't be able to portray this realistically or effectively. However, I don't think it will have any harsh language as the nature of my film isn't one like those captured in the above films, however, it does apply to real life as a lot of people, especially couples go through this, so it therefore fits in the social realism genre.

Imaginary Friend: Trailer outcome

This is the final outcome of our trailer for the film synopsis Mr Oswick created. Our main aim throughout this task was to practise capturing enough footage with a variety of shots and angles. Due to the limited time we had, I think my group and I managed to do this quite successfully. We were also trying to include various locations as this is important when creating a trailer because it helps establish the storyline but also the progression of the actual film. As we were filming in school we tried taking advantage of the areas we had access to that would also fit in nicely with the chosen storyline.

Throughout this whole task I have learnt to make sure I check the footage thoroughly after leaving a location in case it doesn't work out as planned or more is needed. In addition to this, I learnt that I can always shoot the same clip in a variety of ways, for example different angles as I might find some more useful and fitting than other ones. This whole task was filmed on a school flip camera and tripod which is what I think I will be filming my final trailer on. However, because I am also a photography student, I will be able to borrow a digital Canon camera for the poster and magazine front cover part of my course work to ensure the best possible outcome and highest quality photographs as possible.

Diary Post 5: Editing of Imaginary friend

During the next two lessons we were aiming on finishing the trailer of our pretend film. Giving us two lessons, we ensured that we would have more than enough time to edit it together, add music and all the needed elements which would then make it look like a realistic trailer. Such elements include font and titles.

While editing the trailer for an Imaginary Friend, we used Adobe Premier. This was a good opportunity as we were able to explore editing software's and see which ones we are most comfortable and familiar with, once we reach the editing stage of our final trailer. For the first time it did appear as a challenge because we were using iMovie last year to edit the two minute opening of our film, however, with practice this is something we were all be able to overcome.

Lesson 1 of editing:
We mainly tried getting used to Adobe Premier as this was quite different in comparison to iMovie. We firstly looked through all the footage, seeing if the clips captured were fitting to the narrative and would further fit in once put together to create a trailer. We then started thinking of orders we could put the clips in as through analysing other trailers we have learnt that the scenes don't need to be in order. This is because if the trailer was in the scene sequence as the actual film this won't entice and get the audience interested in watching the rest of the film. We therefore, tried to pick out the best parts that would make it as professional and appealing as possible and started editing them together.

Lesson 2:

During this lesson, we mainly focused on titles and music as in our first lesson of editing we managed to put all the footage in the order we thought was best. After adding the music, titles and institution logo we then went over the trailer and tried to make some last minute changes where appropriate. This helped bring it along and make it better as we might have not noticed these little mistakes at the time due to the limited time we had.

Through this editing part of our task, I have learnt that it is important to take time and carefully think about the order of scenes we include in my final trailer. In addition to this I have learnt that I need to carefully consider where I place the titles and text in order to make it as professional looking as possible. I'm still not sure which editing software I would like to use while editing my final trailer, however this is something I can think about later on as I could try both and see which one I am more comfortable with for the best outcome.

Diary Post 4: Imaginary Friend

In our lesson we were divided into two groups of four to create a rough outline of a trailer for a film that our teacher made up.

The film is named imaginary friend and it is about a young girl, named Beth who is having a tough time fitting in school. To make things easier, she gets a visit from her childhood imaginary friend Minerva who tries to make her feel better and look at her current situation in a more positive way. However, this could make her social situations at school a bit worse.

In my group, I worked with Katie, Holly and Ellie. Ellie and I acted out Minerva and Beth whilst Katie and Holly were filming us. We were filming around school as this was a task given to us during lesson time, therefore being the only setting we had access to. However, we did try and  shoot in a variety of locations in school as this is something important to get used to for when we come to film our own trailers. A variety of locations is very important as it helps establish time, date and setting. This then further gets the audience involved and engrossed because it helps develop the storyline in much more depth, making them want to watch the film after watching the trailer.

Our first location when filming was in the corridor and it was a shot of Beth (played by me) looking outside of the window, wishing she had someone to talk to during her lonely times at school. We additionally filmed by the stairs and outside near the bench. We chose these precise locations as we wanted to show how lonely and tough her time during school actually is.

Our teacher gave us a camera shot check-list before we went out filming, to ensure we were including a variety of shots when filming to get different perspectives and make it as professional looking as possible. This will help for when we come to film our final trailers as while we were filming we were made more aware of each clip and how we should proceed with recording it in order for it to be the best it could be. Whilst filming, we managed to include all of the shots listed and this will help us when we come to edit the trailer as we will have a variety of footage to choose from enabling us to choose the best footage.

During our next lesson we might be able to film more if needed or we might just start editing and putting together our trailer. I really liked this task as I feel it gave me the opportunity to see what I need to think about whilst filming. For example, I learnt that location, camera shots and angles are very important in a trailer because as mentioned above, they can help establish a narrative.

Teacher Feedback

Ellenia,

Summary and Strengths

Your blog has a good quality of posts that are completed and finished (e.g. Prezi genre conventions) – your idea is also a good one and will lend itself to a high quality bit of coursework
You have a lowish number of posts at this stage (which we have discussed) – the quality of presentation and analysis is band 3 but we need further research and planning

Targets
  • Further posts – set yourself blog post targets every week and make progress every week – stay on top of deadlines!
  • Look at the blogs of others in the class- esp use of software to present certain key posts for that dynamic presentation style
  • Research – trailer analysis needs more trailers analysed and each one analysed in detail with subheadings etc – sound, mise en scene etc – you can stick with your chosen genre also now
  • The Crush order of scenes – what have you learned?

Fish Tank: Trailer Analysis

The use of inter-titles is heavily relied on during the construction as well as the marketing of a trailer for films within the social realism genre and this is because it helps sell the film to those viewing it as it is most likely a low budget/ independent one, so for this reason Fish Tank uses inter-titles in order to draw in their audience members and have done so by also including awards they have won, serving as a selling point. Furthermore, in this trailer they are also used to show us as an audience the distribution company of the film, as well as this it is a generic convention so the logo of the distribution company is expected to be seen. In addition, inter-titles are used in Fish Tank in order to help establish and make the narrative clearer to the audience members, further enticing them to want to watch the rest of the film. Reviews are also used in independent film trailers such as this one to create a positive buzz about the film as in comparison to a film with a bigger budget, a film such as Fish Tank won't have other elements such as special effects being used throughout the film to promote.

These four images are screenshots of scenes from the trailer that are put in place in order to make the stereotypes of people from such areas stand out more. For example, all of these shots show how girls, even young teenagers aged 15 like the girls in Fish Tank do things you'd expect adults to be doing, suggesting that perhaps under circumstances they are either forced to behave older than their age or have just grown up a lot faster in comparison to other girls in better areas. The first screenshot shows the protagonist Mia, putting on eyeliner as though she is going out and this is part of her everyday routine. The second one again shows Mia drinking alcohol straight out of a glass bottle. The bottom two shots show some girls around the same age as Mia dressed in clothing which you wouldn't expect a girl their age to be wearing as it appears to be a bit provocative and mature for her. The second one shows Mia getting into an argument with these girls, suggesting that she may have an aggressive side to her due to the area she lives in.
These next screenshots all further support some stereotypes which may have been made of people from such areas and this is because these clearly demonstrate a stereotypical representation of a mother which is most likely to be on benefits, has a violent instead of nurturing side to her and appears to be unfit to look after her children. These are all supported in these scenes as she throws parties at her house while her children are there, she hits and swears at both of her daughters, suggesting to the audience that a lot of Mia's behaviour is a result of her mother's parenting skills. Furthermore, suggesting that her mother care more about how she looks like in front of people her age and how she comes across to them, rather than being a loving mother.

Towards the end of the trailer, there are numerous shots which cut very fast back and forth between moments which show these aggressive and lonely moments, to those occasional ones where she receives love and tenderness from characters which are introduced in the film later on. This is effective as it makes the audience wonder why there doesn't appear to be a consistency to the way she is treated and why at such a young age she has a wild and aggressive nature, making the audience want to watch the rest of the film to see what will eventually happen with this young girl with aspirations stuck in a small and run down town.
The last scenes shown in the trailer are those of Mia dancing and are fast paced to create tension as she starts dancing at a faster pace, the music also moves fast along with it helping build tension even more. It then transitions to a shot of her from behind which demonstrates  effective use of natural lighting as she is quite dark in comparison to the bright view out of the window, making the audience wonder if perhaps she has a chance of following those aspirations as she is so young but only if she leaves from everything. The thing we see before the end is a black screen with the title of the film in the centre and the protagonists names. The very last one however, is one which has the release date and the billing blocks giving credits to all those who contributed even in the slightest way to the making of this film.

I really like how the use of music as well as editing is very effective, making it so much more interesting while also allowing audience members to feel any of the emotions portrayed that each character is feeling.

Fish Tank: Poster Analysis

  • For the marketing of Fish Tank, a variety of posters were released in order to make people more aware and attract an audience to go watch the film once released. This poster however, is the main theatrical trailer that was used because this poster includes more information on the film itself as it gives those who haven’t seen the trailer a visual idea of what the films characters will be like.
  • Fish Tank is the title of the film, therefore is a key element to have included on the poster. The title is in the middle of the poster, behind a girl, which appears to be the main character. This is in my opinion is very effective as it could possibly suggest to those looking at it that the film is about the girl on the poster, the text furthermore stands out yet doesn’t take the attention of those looking at it away from the main image completely.
  • Because this is a film created and distributed by an independent film company, the negative space around the character is mainly filled with reviews given by British newspaper critics and awards they have won (winner of the Edinburgh 2009 International film festival and Jury winner of Festival De Cannes). This helps, entice the audience, especially because the reviews included gave the film 4 or more stars.  One of these includes a review written by The Guardian, giving the film a 4 star rating with a comment of  “ Jarvis and Fassbender are outstanding”. I think that this is very effective because the film is British and by having a well established British newspaper review it, it will attract and gain the attention of the targeted and possibly a wider audience. Furthermore, because the names Jarvis and Fassbender are also mentioned in a black and bolder font under the review stars it again links it and makes it clear that the names the article/review by The Guardian is referring to are the protagonists of the film.
  • On the opposite side of the names of the main 3 actors, the name of the writer/producer is written in the same black, bold writing as the names of the actors. Both the writer and producer of Fish Tank is Andrea Arnold and by having her name in bold it is effective as she is a relatively successful British film writer and producer, especially successful with her films within the same genre of Fish Tank, which is the genre of social realism. This will therefore, attract those already established audience members who are fans of her work along with a new one from the actors featured.
  • On the very bottom of the poster, above a blue background, layered the release date is written in white making it stand out against the blue. It is written in a bolder font, making it clear that this is important information. Under the release date, the films website is given stating that further information can be found on there about the film (fishtankmovie.com).  In addition, above the blue box, scaled smaller in comparison to the stars are the logos of the companies, which helped with the funding and production the film.
  • The main focus of the poster is the protagonist that appears to be a girl aged around 16-18 years old; Fish Tank’s protagonist is named Mia.  “Funny, moving and profound” suggests that throughout the film we will be following a particular journey of hers, which will probably be made clearer later in the film.  Mia is placed more to the right of the frame and this is because they wanted to show us, as an audience what she is looking at. Having her look so sadly out of a window could suggest that as a character she might go through something raw and tough.  “Live, Love and give as good as you get” is something that supports this as it could again be suggesting that she might have been forced to go through something tough as this gives an insight into the film and additionally suggests that we, as an audience may possibly be a situation which will some of us will empathise with the protagonist.
  • Similarly to most independent films’ posters, Fish Tank uses bright and eye-catching colours, which may not particularly fit in with the genre or narrative of the film but do however, all fit in. The colours that are used in Fish Tanks poster are light blue, baby pink and black. This follows the general rule of thirds in terms of colour on posters. These colours help make the poster brighter and eye catching. All colours stand out against the cream background and all text is placed in a shard and effective way.
  • Overall, I think that the poster for Fish Tank is very eye catching, appealing and very effective. I chose to analyse and look at it because I think it can help me a lot when I come to create my own poster, especially because I want to create a film within the social realism genre. This has helped me because I now know that I need to consider even the smallest details in order to make my poster as effective and professional looking as possible.

Film Synopsis

From creating the brainstorm, I realised that the main theme within the social realism genre that I was happy to recreate was the idea of portraying the contrast between rich and poor in our society.

Initial Idea:

  • I had an initial idea of showing this by having two couples that were friends, one couple being financially comfortable/wealthy (Steve and Julia) and the other being less fortunate (Chris and Athena).
  • Julia by impulse one day decided to buy a lottery ticket, to then find out after a couple of days that she had won £100,000, peanuts in comparison to what she already had. Meanwhile Chris (occupation: builder) and Athena (occupation: nanny) are struggling to keep their house and are trying to have a child.
  • Chris and Athena's deepest desire is to have a child of their own but have problems with the pregnancy.Their only solution is to go through the IVF process but can't afford it. Athena and Julia have been best friends since the age of 3 and have been through everything together, yet Julia won't lend the money to Athena.
  • Chris and Athena are then forced to sell their house and move into a relatively small apartment. After a couple of months, later on in the film we find out that Julia is pregnant yet doesn't want the child because it is disabled. Athena, then luckily gets pregnant and is ecstatic but Julia shows a lot of hatred and jealousy towards Athena.
  • I then wanted it to end with a shot of Julia in a big house, holding this child and looking very disappointed and angry because she isn't in a position she ever pictured herself to be in and show a shot of Athena in a smallish house with minimal props etc surrounding her but looking like she has everything she ever imagined purely because she is holding her baby. A possible title for this film could be 'Miracle Baby'.
However, after trying to further develop, expand on this idea and asking for advice from my teacher, I have made a few tweaks to my narrative idea in order to get it to the best possible standard.

Final Idea:
  • Chris and Athena are a working class couple living in a run down area of London and can barely afford to keep their house, even after Chris having two jobs. They are in shock to find out that they are expecting a baby.
  • Steve and Julia are a middle to upper class couple living in Central London. They are financially comfortable and have everything they need or want. The only thing, however they desire deeply is to have a child but they have problems conceiving a child and even IVF isn't a solution for them after numerous failed attempts.
  • Through acquaintances Julia meets Athena and finds out that Athena is pregnant yet isn't too sure if she can keep the child because of their financial situation although she loves children, following a career in being a nanny. And after trying to convince Steve of her plan, Julia finally manages to persuade Steve to agree with her idea.
  •  They then after having a meeting with Athena and Chris decide to offer Athena a price for carrying the baby and giving it up for adoption to them, promising that they will take the best possible care of this child.
  •   Over the duration of her pregnancy, Athena starts to have doubts that she has made the right decision. As the bond between Athena and her unborn child grows, the only thing holding her back is their financial situation.
  • Will Athena be 'selfish' and keep the child restricting it's future from this one decision? Or will she decide to give it up to Julia and Steve having it's future set out for the best before it's even born? Is the baby better off with Athena & Chris or Julia & Steve? Has Athena decided that her unborn child has a value beyond any price?
  • Possible cliff hanger in the film: A scene where both Chris and Athena receive a call at the same time, receiving heart breaking news of a fatal car crash. What are the odds? Athena's husband (Chris) and Steve's wife (Julia) were involved in the accident.
  •  A possible title for this film/trailer could be 'Priceless'.

I think that with this final narrative idea, I will be able to really entice and get my targeted audience involved. I further think that I will be able to end the trailer in a gripping way leaving the audience wondering what will happen to this child, also leaving it open for interpretation until they watch the whole film. With these changes made, I believe I will be able to make my trailer appeal to the generic conventions of a film within the social realism genre as it will fit in with some of the themes in a deeper way.
